Looking Back on a Packed Day of Learning and Connection
We had a packed house for WMCO’s March Quarterly Networking Event, and we’re still buzzing from the energy and insights shared throughout the day. Held at Cobot Intel, the event brought together wood manufacturers from across the region to talk shop about what really matters right now—economic forecasts, digital marketing realities, and practical ways to leverage government funding.
We kicked things off with a generous breakfast spread courtesy of Cobot Intel—coffee, croissants, and muffins that set the tone for a full and focused day. Thank you again to the Cobot team for the warm welcome and the incredible hospitality.
Mike Baker, CEO of WMCO, opened the day with organizational updates, welcomed new members, and ran through the year’s event calendar—including the upcoming Ligna Tour in Germany. Attendees also had a chance to introduce themselves, their companies, and what they’re working on.
Economic Outlook: What Lies Ahead?
Ian Taubman from Export Development Canada was first up, diving into the economic climate wood manufacturers can expect in the coming years. He forecasted a modest recession in Canada, with growth hovering below 1% until 2026. He highlighted US tariff uncertainty and stressed the importance of investing in automation and diversified export markets to stay competitive.
Marketing That Works
Next, we heard from Darrell Keezer, CEO of Candybox Digital, who cut through the fluff on digital marketing. From short-form video content to smarter website design, his talk emphasized what’s actually working for companies trying to get in front of customers right now. He also addressed the growing role of AI in marketing—its benefits, its risks, and how to use it without losing your grip on the basics.
Lunch, Funding, and a Look at the Future
We broke for lunch and networking, with lots of good conversation between members and speakers. Then David Reynolds of INAC Services walked us through grant funding opportunities with a practical lens. From automation support to training programs, his session helped break down what’s out there—and how to actually access it.
To close out the day, we were treated to a tour of Cobot Intel’s facility, where members got a firsthand look at their sanding and custom robotic solutions in action. It’s one thing to talk about automation—it’s another to see it solving real problems on the shop floor.
Thanks All Around
We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who made this event possible:
- Our hosts at Cobot Intel (with a special thanks to Julianna McKaigue)
- Our speakers: Ian Taubman, Darrell Keezer, and David Reynolds
- And our sponsors: Leitz Tooling, Microvellum, and Royal City Paints
With such strong attendance and engagement, this event was another reminder of the strength and value of our community. We’re already looking forward to the next Quarterly Networking Event on June 19th at Conestoga College.
Until then—thank you to all who came out and continue to support WMCO. Let’s keep the conversation going.
